At the draft Burke was able to move up the the 22nd spot(Anaheim Ducks) in exchange for Boston’s 30th overall pick and their own 39th overall pick.  With the 22nd overall pick the Leafs selected physical RW Tyler Biggs.  Then, with their 25th overall pick the Leafs selected defenseman Stuart Percy.  Two great picks by the Leafs and a good day overall.

Yesterday the Maple Leafs resigned defenseman Carl Gunnarsson, to a two year contract extension.  He will make an average of $1.3 million for each season.  The six foot two Swede came into his own later in the season as he and Luke Schenn became a reliable shut down tandem.

Earlier in the playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs also signed free agent goalie Mark Owuya to a two year entry level contract.  Per Mapleleafs.com: Owuya, a 21-year-old native of Stockholm, Sweden, played 32 games this season for Djurgarden of the Swedish Elite League posting a 2.18 goals against average and a league best .927 goals against average. The 6-2, 198-pound goaltender also played in seven playoff games for Djurgarden registering a 1.66 goals against average and a .934 save percentage. He was a teammate of Leafs’ prospect Daniel Brodin this past season with Djurgarden. The Leafs also signed 2009 draft pick, Kenny Ryan to a 3 year entry level contract.

A little late reporting this, but Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer has been resigned to a 3-year, $5.4 million contract.  He will make $2.2 million in the first year and then $1.6 million in the last two years.  If Reimer continues to play the way he dad last yer than this contract may end up being a steal.

The NHL Trade Deadline has passed and the Leafs only made one minor deal.  Brian Burke shipped out John Mitchell to the New York Rangers in exchange for the Ranger’s 7th round draft pick in the 2012 draft.  I’ll make a post later today summing up all of the Leaf’s trade activity this month.

When the Francois Beauchemin deal was announced, many wondered who would take over Beauchemin’s minutes.  Brian Burke and Ron Wilson had a strong feeling that Keith Aulie could step in right now.  Well since the Beauchemin deal, Aulie has not looked out of place in the NHL; playing alongside Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf.    Aulie is still prone to mistakes as he is still only 21 years old, but he looks calm alongside the hard hitting Phaneuf.  The two of them seem to play well together as Aulie is the stay at home defenseman while Phaneuf can pinch into the offensive zone.  Aulie still needs to use more of his 6’5 frame, but he’s starting to show himself as a very capable shut down defenseman.  It’s a bit early, but it seems Wilson and Burke may be right about this 21 years old broad shoulders being able to carry this responsibility.
